Linde is now in Nicaragua serving as an environmental volunteer and science teacher in elementary schools.
Since the Peace Corps' inception in 1961, 253 UMW alumni have served. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development. There are 13 Puget Sound alumni now volunteering worldwide. The campus also offers five Peace Corps Master's global programs, which allow students to integrate a master's degree with service overseas.
IU's active support of the Peace Corps is consistent with goals set out in the university's Bicentennial Strategic Plan, to increase IU's worldwide engagement and continue its historical commitment to institution-building around the globe.
"The experience enables college and university alumni to use the creative-thinking skills they developed in school to make an impact in communities around the world", she said. "And that's exactly what the Peace Corps was for me - an opportunity to think big, and do something bigger". "For more than half a century, the Peace Corps has provided valued services to countries around the world, and for more than half a century it has returned to the United States some of our most globally competent citizens".
Peace Corps works with U-M to host two on-campus recruiters who share their personal experiences as volunteers and provide information about applying for service.
The figures are based on the number of alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers in 2016.
This year's rankings follow the launch of a refreshed brand platform that underscores the agency's commitment to putting the user experience first, making Peace Corps more accessible to audiences through the platforms it already uses.
Alana Christopher '14, a current Peace Corps volunteer, is located in the city of Ouani, on the island of Anjouan in Comoros, a country between Madagascar and the continent of Africa.
"The past seven months of serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines has stretched me in ways one can't fully be prepared for", she said.
This is UCD's 16th consecutive year in the top 25. Whitworth University in Spokane and The Evergreen State College in Olympia also made the top-10 list: Whitworth sent 12 and came in fourth, and Evergreen sent 11 volunteers and came in seventh.
Linde's extension of the Wisconsin Idea came to pass when she went to a career fair and heard from other Peace Corps volunteers.
