Just don't expect to share your own 360-degree media via the app-Facebook 360 is now limited to viewing photos and videos, sharing them to your own Timeline, and "reacting" to them with one of the network's six canned responses. Meanwhile, integrations with devices like Samsung Gear VR connect Vimeo's 360-degree library to the world of VR.
"Vimeo's creator community is known for pioneering new video formats and pushing the boundaries of storytelling", said Anjali Sud, svp and gm of Vimeo's creator platform, in a statement. With Vimeo, on the other hand, we're seeing the site-wide launch of 360 videos in general. These settings will be available to all of Vimeo's creators, who will also gain access to a "360 Video School" to learn the ins and outs of shooting and editing on 360-degree cameras.
So, how do you watch these 360 videos?
You'll have to imagine what it'd look like in VR.
Vimeo became the latest video platform to add support for 360-degree videos Wednesday, and the first one to add a dedicated option to sell videos in the format via its Vimeo on Demand platform. This is believed to be the first-ever Facebook-branded VR app out on the market.
Following: "Experience 360 content that your friends have posted on Facebook as well as 360 content from Pages and people you follow".
Vimeo users can find 360 videos via the service's mobile apps as well as its website, and Vimeo is also highlighting some of the best examples with a curated 360 video channel. These include videos and images posted online by companies, organizations and creators, as well as panoramic media from your friends. The app isn't a full version of the social network.
"Vimeo has always been committed to preserving and delivering the highest quality video and our move into 360 expands our premium video technology solution to 360 filmmakers".
