Google launches new Video Intelligence API

With the announcement of this deal, Google scored a massive enterprise client for Google Cloud, a service that the Mountain View-based tech giant has been aggressively promoting in recent years. The Chocolate Factory notes that even with the Google Apps team pitching in, it can not support all of the customers it hopes to bring over to Cloud, so it is asking for some help.

Google has acquired Kaggle, a data science platform originally started in Australia by federal government economist and Melbourne university student, Anthony Goldbloom.

Google says the Video Intelligence API allows developers to take advantage of Google video search capabilities even if they don't have a background in machine learning or computer vision. "In many ways, to me Google Cloud is a natural extension of our mission" to put the world's information at everyone's fingertips, he said. According to TechCrunch sources, the company is reportedly buying Kaggle, a group that hosts both data science and machine-learning competitions, as well as a job board with listings for analysts, programmers, and more.

Google, with its AI expertise, is presenting itself as the cloud industry player best positioned to help ordinary companies to unlock these benefits - benefits that could be of interest to nation states too.

The Mountain View, California-based company announced a new video intelligence application program interface (API) today at its Cloud Next conference in San Francisco.

"The reaction [to the SAP-Google partnership] is very positive - shows everybody here that Google is very serious about the enterprise", said Akash Agarwal, group vice president of enterprise mobile at SAP's Mobile Business Unit. Developers and the enterprises, which Google will need to attract more business away from Amazon and Microsoft, are taking notice - as was evidenced here by big crowds and a standing-room only audience at the company's Google Cloud Next conference. Acquiring Kaggle has given the software company instant access to one of the largest communities of data scientists on the planet. The tool uses machine learning to extract "entities" (nouns) from videos to make them searchable.

"Canadians always love to know that their data is still on this soil, especially as there is legislation in the USA that allows the government to go into data centres under the Patriot Act", said Roland Gossage, chief executive of the Toronto-based e-commerce provider GroupBy Inc., in an interview.

Buying Kaggle could also boost Google's recruiting efforts, giving it access to a large pool of scientists.

Increasing multi-cloud adoption has driven Google Cloud adoption to almost double over the past year, according to 451 Research. By playing a short commercial, the API was able to identify the dachshund in the video, when it appeared in the video, and then understand that the whole thing was a commercial.
