Now 1 million advertisers strong, in-app booking is coming to Instagram

The new feature, which was revealed by Instagram head of business James Quarles, will enable users to make these appointments by visiting the company's own Instagram page.

As competition for digital advertising dollars heats up, Instagram is unveiling new features to prove how often its app drives sales.

Before and after pictures of hair, makeup and other services are popular on Instagram but it's hard for businesses to determine what the impact of such posts actually is. About 8 million businesses now use profiles on Instagram, which the app is working to link to Facebook business profiles, Quarles said.

Instagram is expected to announce Wednesday that it has one million monthly active advertisers, representing a five-fold increase from a year ago. Included in the roadmap will be a tool allowing consumers to book appointments directly from Instagram profiles set to roll out "later this year". The platform also began testing in-app shopping in 2016 and recently expanded analytics or Insights as well as adding multi-image posts.

"People come to Instagram to follow their passions, from travel and fashion to food, entertainment and everything in between". "Eighty percent of people on Instagram follow a business".

When Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012, it had limited advertising with just a few well-known brands.

Users will be able to book appointments for things like haircuts by visiting a company's profile and tapping a button to schedule such appointments.
