The remains of Isabel Celis, who went missing from her Tucson home in April 2012 when she was 6 years old, were found in a rural part of Pima County about a month ago, according to police.
No information was given as to what led police to the location, but Magnus said it was not "happenstance".
"Obviously this is not the ending that any of us had hoped for, but this is also not the ending of the case", Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus said in a press conference.
Isabel's disappearance from her family's home resulted in a missing child case that involved a massive search in Tucson by hundreds of law enforcement personnel, national media attention and public scrutiny of her parents. Tucson police Chief Chris Magnus says remains found in a remote area in Pima County about a month ago are those of Celis, who went missing from her family home almost five years ago.
Isabel Celis was last seen being put into bed in Tuscon, Arizona, at 11pm in April 2012. She was reported missing by her father, Sergio Celis, the next morning. At one point, Sergio entered into an agreement with state child protective services that he would not have contact for a period of time with his two sons, Isabel's older brothers. The police department will continue to actively pursue "those responsible for any kind of involvement in Isabel's disappearance", he said. As we move forward in our investigation, we will release additional details as they become available. We ask for our privacy during this time so that we can do that.
Medical center CEO Judy Rich said in a statement: "This is not the news we had hoped to hear". He said he thinks it is possible that people know something about happened to the young girl.
It shows what she sould look like today, more than three years after the then 6-year-old had vanished from her home overnight.
"In fact, reverberations of this have gone well beyond Tucson and even Arizona, (and) have affected people throughout the country".
"This is not the ending that any of us hoped for but it is also not the ending of the case", he said.
There is a development in the case of missing Isabel Celis, according to the girl's mother, Becky Celis.
