Eddie Murphy was among numerous comics and film stars opening up about the loss of his older brother, Charlie, who died Wednesday after a battle with leukemia. His Comedy Central stand-up special, "Charlie Murphy: I Will Not Apologize", was shown in 2010. Him choosing this particular venue to speak on their relationship is fitting as he mentioned that Mayer's song "You're Going to Live Forever in Me" always reminded him of Murphy.
Nicole Murphy, ex-wife of Charlie's brother Eddie Murphy, shared a poignant post Wednesday night, remembering the comedian as a "ball of energy". Try saying his name without saying it like Dave Chappelle-as-Rick James said it.
"Charlie is actually my best impression", Eddie said, after discovering Charlie was among the top results when people google "Eddie Murphy impressions". In the fan-captured video, Chappelle reminisced about Mayer's 2004 guest appearance on his hit sketch comedy show.
Not only did the two talk about his career in comedy, with Charlie sharing some of his signature stories in the industry, but he also spit a hilarious freestyle at the end.
"He was doing well, but he contracted pneumonia and that's what took him out".
Charlie Murphy was born on July 12, 1959, in Brooklyn to Charles Edward and Lillian Murphy.
In a statement, his family said their hearts are heavy with loss.
Murphy is survived by his three children. "He died with gigs on the books".
Eddie Murphy was deeply appreciative of Charlie's warmth and his skill. He would tell a story and not miss an inflection or a single detail.
