The conspiracy theorist is simply "playing a character" as host of his popular radio show "The Alex Jones Show" and on his Infowars website, his lawyers argued during a custody battle in a Texas court last week.
Alex Jones's attorney, Randall Wilhite, told District Judge Orlinda Naranjo at a recent pre-trial hearing last week that his client's actions on his show should not be taken into account when judging him as a parent, saying it would be similar to citing actor Jack Nicholson's performance as The Joker in Batman, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
Alex Jones, the fiery conspiracy theorist and provocateur who commands an audience of millions based on the idea that he is one of the only purveyors of the unvarnished truth, is now defending himself in a civil suit with an argument based partially on a claim that he is simply a performance artist, according to reporters who have been in the courtroom. He predicted that Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime show would be a satanic ritual, and he accused her of being involved in child sex-trafficking rings run out of pizza parlors, an operation he claimed was headed by Hillary Clinton.
For now, Alex Jones's lawyer said what you hear from the InfoWars founder is not what he really believes.
Infowars.com has alleged that the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting was a hoax and that the September 11, 2001, terror attacks involved the federal government. "He's a way greater person than I was at 12", Alex Jones said to his son in the video.
But with the rise of Donald Trump, Jones has gained increased prominence and legitimacy.
If this is all an act, then Alex Jones might just be the most despicable person on the face of the planet.
"When I say, 'I'm going to kick your ass, ' it's the Infowar", Jones said.
Well, the Austin American-Statesman reminds everyone that Jones caters to a massive audience - he can boast of 7.6 million unique visitors per month on the InfoWars site and over 2 million YouTube subscribers. "I will not let you down", the candidate told the host.
Here's an example, a video from March 28, of Jones titled, "Democrats Admit They Are Planning To Kill Trump".
Roger Stone, a Republican television pundit and longtime Trump confidant, called Jones' web-based media empire "Trump's secret weapon" his book "The Making of the President 2016".
