Detroit won two of the three contests in what was initially scheduled to be a four-game series. Seven of the 38 hits he has yielded over 37 1/3 innings over six starts have been home runs.
"When we go into it, we don't ever really think "two" - just set it up where if he has a quick inning, it's open for that", Francona said. Jason Kipnis hit the very next pitch to Collins, and that gave the Indians a 3-0 advantage.
Kluber is 3-2 with a 5.06 ERA.
Once that inning was over, the Indians went with Miller and Allen the rest of the way.
The Tigers were the beneficiary of a bad defensive play by Jose Ramirez in the bottom of the fourth, who at first muffed a bouncing ball down the third base line, then compounded things by still trying to throw to first (this was Miguel Cabrera). Kluber left his start Tuesday night against the Tigers after experiencing renewed discomfort in his lower back and he had trouble standing for his postgame interview with the media.
Tigers: Cabrera, who came off the DL before Tuesday's game, was in the starting lineup and played the entire game Wednesday.
Michael Fulmer, who was scheduled to start Thursday, will instead take the mound Friday in Oakland.
With a staff that also features Michael Fulmer and Jordan Zimmermann, Ausmus likes his team's chances of contending. That's a stark contrast to last season, when the Indians went 14-4 in the season series.
