Senate to Vote on FDA and USAF Nominees, House Not in Session

Senators voted 76-22 for Heather Wilson to be the next Air Force secretary, with only a simple majority needed to approve her nomination.

I was pleased to meet with Dr. Wilson earlier this year to discuss her priorities for the Air Force, including readiness and hiring challenges as well as controlling the costs of major acquisitions.

Wilson also served as National Security.

Wilson, 56, is a former Republican congresswoman from New Mexico. John McCain, the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Wilson "has proven herself as a leader".

"We live in a remarkable country, protected by innovators and intrepid Airmen who take great risks on our behalf", Wilson said in a statement.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat who voted against Wilson on Monday, said her work for Sandia and other national laboratories was "a clear violation of federal law".

Mark Green, Trump's second choice for Army Secretary, dropped his bid last week after his anti-minority remarks came to light.

Vincent Viola, Trump's first Amy secretary nominee, and Navy Secretary nominee Philip Bilden both withdrew from consideration in February over concerns about their financial holdings. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, questioned her about past consulting work for government nuclear labs. Wilson denied any impropriety.

During her confirmation hearings, Wilson said she plans to address the Air Force's pilot shortage as well as seek additional funding for the service's modernization efforts.

A 1982 graduate from the US Air Force Academy, she is the first of its products to become secretary of the Air Force.

Wilson said that if confirmed she would resign her current position as president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

In 2013, the DOE inspector general found Sandia paid Wilson's consulting company $464,000 from 2009 to 2011 with no evidence of work.

She was appointed to the National Security Council in 1989 under former President George H.W. Bush and after an intermediate period in the private sector, she was elected to the House of Representatives. Trump has not nominated another individual to be Navy Secretary.
