Johanna Konta stunned by Hsieh Su-Wei in French Open first round

Britain's number one Johanna Konta suffers a shock exit in the first round of the French Open following a three-set defeat to unseeded Hsieh Su-Wei.

There was little that Hsieh seemed able to do in that first set, and it looked as though Konta would finally break her Roland Garros duck. Konta has yet to win a match in Paris in three main draw appearances and explained after today's result: "I think I probably came out of the blocks a bit quicker than she did". Konta made 13 unforced errors in the 67-minute second set, a huge difference from the ease with which she coasted the first.

The second-seeded Serb dispatched clay-court specialist Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round of the clay-court major. But in terms of the match that I played and the improvements that I feel I have made, I do feel like I am a better player at the end of this last few weeks on the surface than I was at the beginning. He beat qualifier Guido Pella 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in an all-Argentine matchup in the first round at Roland Garros on Tuesday. The 31 year-old, better known for her doubles exploits, with 19 titles in her career to date compared to just 2 singles wins, produced one of the best performances of her career to progress to the second round despite hitting a high of 40/1 in-play.

- American Madison Keys, the women's number 12 seed, beat Australia's Ashleigh Barty 6-3 6-2 for her first win on clay this season.

In-form Ukrainian Elina Svitolina moved swiftly into the second round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Kazakhstans Yaroslava Shvedova.

- Pironkova, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros past year, beat German Mona Barthel 6-0 6-4.

Instead, a stunning drop volley set up the first match point - only for a loose back hand from Hsieh to hand Konta a lifeline.

But Hsieh saved the three break points and then won seven straight points to clinch the tie-break and level the match.

The 29th seed, whose career has been plagued by injury, confirmed his participation in this year's French Open only last Friday after suffering shoulder and back problems.

The duo exchanged breaks in the third before a second consecutive loss of serve from Konta handed Hsieh an another advantage that she would not relinquish as her opponent failed to convert four more break opportunities in a tense final game.

"I most importantly play tennis for myself and I play tennis for my own enjoyment".
