'Revenge' not Mladenovic's plan for Bacsinszky rematch

Kristina Mladenovic rode the French crowd on a packed Suzanne-Leglen court to help lift her over defending champion Garbine Muguruza on Sunday.

In men's action, nine-time champion Rafael Nadal and defending champion Novak Djokovic both won in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Paris for the 11th time, equaling Roger Federer's record for the professional era. The last time that situation occurred was at the 1979 Australian Open when Barbara Jordan won her first Grand Slam crown.

Venus Williams' chances of adding a first French Open title to her collection of seven Grand Slams faded on Sunday after the 36-year-old was beaten 5-7 6-2 6-1 by Swiss Timea Bacsinszky in the French Open fourth round.

Jelena Ostapenko defeated 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur, Caroline Wozniacki defeated two-time Slam victor Svetlana Kuznetsova. Her best French Open showing was in 2002 when she lost to her sister Serena in the final. Bacsinszky, she said, "had so many answers today", among them an array of well-placed drop shots that tested her quickness on the red surface.

But she managed to pull off the biggest victory of her career despite 16 double-faults, seven in each of the last two sets on a windy day with the temperature in the 60s (teens Celsius).

"I love you, too", Mladenovic told the chanting crowd after the win. "I think we should ask other players if that's what they think", Bacsinszky replied.

The lone American and last Grand Slam champion standing in the women's draw made a spirited comeback in the opening set, but could not solve Bacsinszky's baseline attack of varied spins and speeds over the final two sets.

A year after showing so much resolve while winning the French Open, Muguruza fell apart down the stretch. "So I came back and played a more versatile game".

"I am surprised that I'm in the fourth round here", Pliskova said after her match. She also was the runner-up to the American at Wimbledon in 2015. "But still there are some things that I want to improve and that I want to play better".

Fifth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina continued her hot streak by defeating Magda Linette of Poland 6-4, 7-5. Throw in the fact that world No. 1 Angelique Kerber, who beat Venus in the semifinals previous year, is struggling, and it's not out of the question to picture Williams standing with the winner's trophy hoisted high above her head.

Mother Oracene was leaning forward in her seat clapping encouragement to her daughter, who earned break points in the fourth game only to sail a deep backhand as Bacsinszky earned her eighth consecutive game for 4-0.
