Russian Federation threatens to target U.S. coalition jets after Syrian warplane shot down

The downing of the aircraft was "a cynical violation of Syria's sovereignty", the Russian Defence Ministry said in an e-mailed statement on Monday (June 19).

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that, starting Monday, it will track all jets and drones of the USA -led coalition west of the Euphrates and treat them as targets.

19 de junio de 2017, 09:17Moscow, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) has suspended as of today the memorandum of cooperation with the United States to avoid air incidents in Syria and warned of the monitoring of global coalition apparatus.

The Pentagon said that it did not seek to fight the Syrian regime, Russian Federation or pro-regime forces, but was merely acting in defence of its coalition partners in Syria.

The US committed an "act of aggression" in shooting down a Syrian government jet, Russia's deputy foreign minister said on Monday, as battles contrinued to rage between US and Syrian government allies around Taqba.

Russian Federation first halted the deconfliction agreement in April after the United States carried out air strikes on Syrian targets.

The escalation comes after the U.S. shot down a Syrian jet that had been dropping bombs near US-backed fighter jets.

US Central Command confirmed that one of its F-18 Super Hornets downed the Syrian aircraft, which it said had dropped bombs near the American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The ministry also called on the USA military to provide a full account of why it made a decision to shoot down the Syrian SU-22.

A senior USA defense official tells CNN the so-called "de-confliction line" remains open with Russian Federation.

SDF fighters make up an Syrian Arab and Kurdish alliance known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, which are being supported by the US -led coalition in the fight against IS extremists and, separately, the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's six-year civil war. In April, after the United States missile strike on a Syrian airbase, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia would suspend the 2015 agreement aimed at minimizing risks of in-flight incidents. The U.S. anti-ISIS mission noted that it repeatedly warned pro-Syrian regime forces over the now cut deconfliction channel.

A Pentagon spokesman said the United States had not shot down a Syrian regime aircraft before Sunday's confrontation.

"What is this if not an act of aggression?" he said.

"As a result of the attack, the Syrian aircraft was destroyed", the Russian ministry said Monday, adding that the pilot ejected over an ISIS-controlled area and his status is unknown.
