SDF fighters make up an Syrian Arab and Kurdish alliance known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, which are being supported by the US -led coalition in the fight against IS extremists and, separately, the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's six-year civil war. In April, after the United States missile strike on a Syrian airbase, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia would suspend the 2015 agreement aimed at minimizing risks of in-flight incidents. The U.S. anti-ISIS mission noted that it repeatedly warned pro-Syrian regime forces over the now cut deconfliction channel.
A Pentagon spokesman said the United States had not shot down a Syrian regime aircraft before Sunday's confrontation.
"What is this if not an act of aggression?" he said.
"As a result of the attack, the Syrian aircraft was destroyed", the Russian ministry said Monday, adding that the pilot ejected over an ISIS-controlled area and his status is unknown.
