United States backed Syrian forces seize Raqqa district from IS militants

Cihan Shekh Ehmed, a spokeswoman for the USA -backed militia known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, said the group's fighters seized the western district of al-Qadisiya from IS on Monday.

Turkey's military says it has returned fire after a cross-border attack by Syrian Kurdish forces. The Kurdish-led fighters had been advancing from the city's east after they seized a major stronghold in May, and from the west and north. The government's statement came after USA planes downed two Syrian aircraft in just two weeks over the deconfliction zone near American forces in Syria.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday that the U.S. will continue to provide weapons to the PKK's Syrian offshoot the armed People's Protection Units (YPG) after concluding the battle against Daesh in northern Syria's Raqqa province. It will require rigorous communication through the several channels that the United States and Russian Federation have established to avoid getting tangled in Syria's civil war.

The U.S. -led coalition said it would look into the report.

A spokesman for the US -led coalition told The Associated Press that the Syrian Democratic Forces are now in control of all high-speed routes into Raqqa from the south. The footage was reportedly taken outside the ISIS-held city of Raqqa in Syria.

According to Hemze Hamza, a journalist who uploaded the video to Twitter, the woman is a Kurdish fighter.

Also Wednesday, Syrian government forces pushed on with their assault against rebels holed up in the northeast corner of capital and its suburbs, with a barrage of air and artillery strikes on the already devastated neighborhoods of Jobar and Ein Terma. The last five high valued targets killed by the coalition were in the Mayadin area of the Euphrates valley, Dillon said. He said Israel's policy is "whoever attacks us, we will attack him". "The pressure is going down [since the warplane was shot down] and is de-escalated in the battle space and we are able to focus on our number one mission".

A US -backed Arab-Kurd coalition fighting Islamic State (ISIS) militants near Raqqa has captured the district of Al-Qadisia outside of the extremists' self-declared capital in Syria, military officials say.

Arab and Kurdish militiamen from the Syrian Democratic Forces smashed into the jihadists' main Syrian bastion on June 6 after a months-long drive to encircle it.
