Premier League clubs in 'advanced talks' to cut short summer transfer window

Reports are indicating that there is a proposal on the table for the summer transfer window to be brought forward from next year onwards so that it closes before the Premier League season begins.

Although transfer rumors between leagues will still crop up beyond the new deadline, the total volume of mid-August PL transfer rumors should be reduced, bringing a bit of relief to fans, managers, and players who are exhausted of the speculation-and, more importantly, some clubs will have less work to do in terms of incorporating new players into their squads and more stability for the beginning of the season.

Would make sense. Can't see why Watford would oppose it?

Swansea manager Paul Clement was quizzed about the proposed change, to which he replied: "Our club would support that decision". The current window, in line with many other European leagues, closes on August 31, nearly three weeks after the start of the Premier League season.

Here, we look at some of the top football transfer stories from the British and world media in The Sport Review's Grapevine, published twice a day during the summer transfer window.

"That's why I think if the window is shut before the season starts everything is sorted out and we can get on with the football".

Percy sites van Dijk, Sigurdsson and Ross Barkley as prime examples with each player causing disruptions at their current clubs and deals only likely to be brokered once said clubs potentially hit breaking point by the end of the window.

"I don't really understand why it goes to the end of August".

The plan would have no power to prevent a club such as Barcelona targeting Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho - as they have done this summer - for instance.

It is a complicated scenario, not least because it has the potential to put England's top-flight teams at a disadvantage because rivals across Europe will be active for up to three weeks after the Premier League window has closed.

It will certainly be an interesting topic for discussion on 7 September.
