Nevertheless, Saban's Alabama team will open another season as the nation's consensus No. 1 team after the Associated Press unveiled its initial Top 25 poll of the 2017 season this morning.
The No. 15 ranking is pretty similar to a year ago, when the Bulldogs were No. 18 in the preseason AP poll, and no. 16 in the coaches poll. And that includes on Twitter, where fans and experts alike shared their opinions on where the teams placed, or didn't place.
Georgia began last season ranked No. 18 in the AP poll but finished out of the top 25 in an 8-5 season.
Kansas State will enter the football season as a ranked team for the first time since 2014.
- No. 6 Penn State has its best preseason ranking since it was No. 3 in 1999. Ohio State was No. 2, edging No. 3 Florida State and preventing the first 1 vs. 2 opening game since the preseason poll began in 1950.
No. 12 Auburn will open the season against Georgia Southern on September 2 at 6:30 p.m. central time at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The sixth-ranked Nittany Lions beat Wisconsin to win the Big Ten Conference last season, and the seventh-ranked Huskies represented the Pacific 12 Conference in last season's playoff.
Other SEC teams ranked: No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 LSU and No. 25 Tennessee.
Alabama is No. 1 in the preseason Top 25, the first program in 12 years to take the top spot two years in a row. They finished the season 8-5.
- 1.9 teams that started the season unranked finished ranked in the top 10.
