Pa. National Guard soldiers join Harvey relief efforts

The Iowa Army National Guard deployed two Chinook helicopters and 11 soldiers Friday to support response operations in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Guard officials said Saturday that about 500 soldiers are being deployed to Austin, Texas, in support of the relief operations.

"The Iowa National Guard has responded to more than a dozen different domestic response missions since 2005, including Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav, so this is a mission we're very familiar with", he says.

They will stay as long as needed in order to help protect the lives and property of the residents impacted by the storm.

The 10 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers will join six Pennsylvania Air National Guard Airmen, who already deployed earlier this week.

In a press release, Hutchinson said the deployment could extend up to 30 days. Their transport is a helicopter brought down by the National Guard from the Dallas area, but it has a story of its own. The National Guard took over a private airport in Brookshire, where they are preparing 8,000 pounds of supplies. "We stand ready and able to assist to our neighbors during their times of need", said Maj. The state's National Guard anticipates sending over 200 more guardsmen through the weekend.
