LeBron James congratulates Russell Westbrook on his record $205M deal

Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to a five-year extension that projects to be worth $205 million, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal. Since the athletic guard is already signed through the 2017-18 season, the new contract takes effect a year later and will keep Westbrook in OKC until 2022-23.

Westbrook now has the most lucrative contract in National Basketball Association history, just a touch higher than the new deals signed by Steph Curry and James Harden this summer. Westbrook's commitment to Oklahoma City coupled with the reputations of Anthony and George could be critical in luring other players, in particular veteran buyout candidates, who may want to latch onto a title contender before the March 1 playoff eligibility deadline.

George will hit unrestricted free agency next summer, with plenty of buzz circulating around the league about where he'll end up.

Yesterday, Russell Westbrook signed the Richest contract in NBA History. It shows the Thunder are here, and here to stay with sustained success.

That's Westbrook, though: Perfectly understated, perfectly private, perfectly business-like. Both will upgrade the Thunder's roster now, give them future flexibility and cost very little.

Westbrook, the league's reigning MVP, has been sitting on the deal for months; the Thunder first dangled the deal in July.

Kevin Durant fled the scene, leaving Westbrook in charge to spark things. That Westbrook signed this deal on Durant's birthday should send a clear signal to the Warriors. Oklahoma City is not a small market and typically has trouble attracting top free agents.

The Thunder's projected luxury tax bill this year after acquiring Anthony: almost $27.8 million.
