According to DPA, "The company does not clearly inform users that it continuously collects personal data about the usage of apps and web surfing behavior through its web browser Edge, when the default settings are used". They are not informed which data are being used for what goal, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterward. Before Windows 10, the default browser of Windows was Internet Explorer, Microsoft killed it when it launched Windows 10 but could not do well with Edge as well.
The main interface of the service is relatively clean as far as search engines which aren't Google are concerned, though scrolling down on it will still present you with "Top Stories" which can be turned off in the "Home page" section of the app's Settings menu, with the change itself going live the moment you open a new tab. But for now this will work only for those who have Fall creators update on their computer. Because of the company's approach to data collection, the users can't provide valid consent to Microsoft, according to the European Union data protection legislation.
Microsoft Edge's unique feature that sets it apart from other browsers is the "Continue on PC" function. "They are not informed which data are being used for what objective, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterwards". The first is to help Microsoft fix Windows for devices on which it experiences errors, and the second is for Microsoft to serve personalized ads to Windows 10 users.
It seems if the protection of your users is one of their your priorities, it makes a lot more sense to use Edge than Chrome.
These data are called "telemetry data".
The DPA said that Microsoft does offer users a good overview of what the basic telemetry level is about, but the company describes the full telemetry level in a much more general way. The Edge is now moving out from the home and making its place in Android and iOS.
