Shortly before 6 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they had arrested Kyle Adam Maraghy, 26, of Charlotte, and charged him with simple assault. He is being taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
The suspect is accused of sucker-punching an older fan Thursday night in the upper deck of Bank of America stadium during the Panthers versus Eagles game.
A video posted on Instagram shows shows a young man in a black Cam Newton jersey striking an older man in the face four times.
Carrigan says the victim was upset about the fan in the jersey standing up throughout the game and obstructing his view.
"Words gradually got more and more escalated. there previously was a single mom and her son between us, they left halfway through the 3rd", according to the Instagram post.
The Panthers reviewed the tape and identified the man in the video, the team said in a statement earlier Friday. "The Carolina Panthers are committed to a fan-friendly and family-friendly stadium experience".
The incident happened after the 62-year-old victim told the Panthers fans standing in front of them that they were "being jerks" for not sitting. "The behavior exhibited by the perpetrator is unacceptable and will not be condoned at Bank of America Stadium". Blood was dripping from the man's face at the end of their exchange.
NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said on a conference call Friday morning that the league was aware of the incident and in contact with Panthers security. Carrigan claims that the fight broke out in section 541.
