Mumbai's swashbuckling batsman Shreyas Iyer and Hyderabad pacer Mohammad Siraj were the surprise picks for India's three-match Twenty20 worldwide series against New Zealand, which will be played between November 1-7. Ashish Nehra has been named in the squad only for the first game following his announcement to retire after the first T20 game in Delhi.
India will take on Blackcaps in the T20I series starting from 1st November, which is the retirement date of veteran pacer Ashish Nehra.
On the 22-year-old Mumbai right-hander Shreyas, who has been a part of Delhi Daredevils in IPL and who averages 26.85 in T20s and a healthy strike rate of 128.00 in 53 games and scored nine fifties, Prasad said: "Shreyas has been performing consistently in T20s, one-dayers and first-class. We are monitoring the workload of the players, rotational policy will also apply to the captain", Prasad said.
Meanwhile, selectors recalled experienced opener Murali Vijay to Test squad for the first two matches of a three-Test series against Sri Lanka which starts next month. Experienced wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has also been sustained for the T20 series and will expect regular chances in future. He comes in for fellow Tamil Nadu batsman Abhinav Mukund and has enough time to prove his fitness as the three-Test series gets under way from November 16 in Kolkata.
"As far as the Test series is concerned, he is going to play". MSK Prasad led selection committee declared the 16 man squad today giving preference to Iyer over unorthodox all-rounder Kedar Jadhav. "He is doing well, he has been duly recognised and rewarded as well".
