The director, who began his film career as an art director, went on to become one of the most sought after filmmakers from 1970s to mid 1990s. He started his directorial career officially with his first film Ulsavam.
"The demise of I V Sasi, who has given us evergreen hits and has directed the most number of movies in Malayalam, is a loss that can not be compensated". His most noted films so far include Alkoottathil Thaniye, Kanamarayathu, Aksharangal and Vadakaykkoru Hrudayam.
I.V Sasi played a key role in turning actors like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Jayan, Sukumaran, Soman, Vincent and Seema into stars.
IV Sasi had worked with great script writers like MT Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, T Damodaran and Ranjith.
IV Sasi was the one who established Mammootty and Mohanlal in the film industry. The MD of Aries Group said he discussed about the film with Sasi even two days before the latter's death. I V Sasi has directed more than 170 odd films over a span of 34 years and has constantly delivered super hits and some of them classified as classics or good cinema. While he directed the first color cinema in Malayalam, Itha Ivide Varae (1977), he also made the first Cinemascope movie, Alavuddinum Athbhudhavilakum (1979). Later on, he worked on Avalude Ravukal that was categorised as a classic and also have the remake in Hindi. Other factors like (music director) Shyam's background scores and brilliant writers like T Damodaran and MT Vasudevan Nair can not be discounted but it would be eye-opening for a movie connoisseur to compare the films MT wrote for Sasi and Hariharan (a legend in his own right and a contemporary of Sasi) respectively to see how differently they eventually turned out.
He has made around 150 films in various languages including Hindi. Though he made many Tamil and Malayalam hits with Kamal Haasan, Aavuthinum Adbhuthavilakkum (1980), that starred Kamal Haasan in the title role along with Rajinikanth (his lone Malayalam film) and yesteryear Tamil superstar Gemini Ganeshan as villain was probably the most prominent among them.
