More than 16 people were killed when the boat in which they were travelling capsized at Pavithra Sanghamam near Vijayawada.
Reports said that 15 persons were rescued by local fishermen and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were pressed into service to trace the missing persons, a senior police official said. The passengers hailed from Ongole town in Prakasam district in the Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place when the overloaded tourist boat capsized midway due to the weight of around 35 passengers.
Three bodies were recovered from the river while search was on for others.
The boat was proceeding from Bhavani Islands to Pavithra Sanghamam on Sunday evening. They said that the passengers were stuck beneath the boat and despite having the life jackets they were struggling to come out.
The boat exceeded its maximum carrying capacity of 24.
Director general of police N Sambasiva Rao, Krishna district collector Lakshmi Kantham and the other senior officials of the district administration are personally supervising the rescue operations. The boat was owned by private agency, Simple Water Sports.
