National Christmas tree shortage, Vermont farmer says not here

A shortage of Christmas trees is not something many of us want to hear.

"We came to get our tree for the season".

"There's a lot of sadness that we don't do it anymore, since we were, I think the last choose and cut trees in Kern County", Gary New, co-owner of Santa's Forest Christmas Farm said.

"That's a Norway spruce and it's three years old", he said, pointing at a tree.

Almost 4,000 acres of CT farmland are planted with Christmas trees - the 13th largest acreage in the U.S.

Erway says this year is turning out to be among the best in years for many local tree farms, thanks mostly to the recent wet summer and fall, and lots of warmth.

The shortage of trees means sellers like Falco have to pay more and in return prices for customers also increase.

He says they're hoping to keep up with demand and have ordered 700 more trees to plant for the year.

The Grant Christmas Tree Farm is located at 716 Whitaker Road, Grant. While Americans have been buying real Christmas trees for around 75 years, Hundley said, the artificial tree industry has taken off in the last 25 years or so. So farmers must put in hours of work shearing the trees every year, holding back their vertical growth so they get thick and sturdy. Now, 10 years later, there are fewer trees to harvest.

"It's definitely more hard to get the Noble firs - and it has raised the wholesale price for us", she said. We don't have to sell them on the idea of getting a tree.

"I think it got to the point that most farmers in the last month and half, two months it nearly got to a first come first serve basis", Poe said. They bought a white, artificial one to match their mid-century home past year.

On Black Friday, dozens went out to Wyffels Tree Farm to shop around for a Christmas Tree.

Predictions for many places are that as we get closer to Christmas, the supply may dwindle even more.

Trees are most expensive in California ($76) and the least expensive in North Dakota ($27), though the data does not distinguish cities from more rural areas, where trees may be cheaper.

It's important is to make a fresh cut on the bottom of the tree.
