Kaka announced his retirement on Sunday after a gleaming career on three continents.
The 35-year-old called time on his stint with MLS side Orlando City in October and a return to boyhood club Sao Paulo was thought to be the only option on the table when it came to possibly extending a stellar career.
The local media quoted Kaka as saying, "I am preparing to continue in football and to have a different role, but I will no longer be a professional player, an athlete".
During a storied career, the hugely talented attacking midfielder also starred at Real Madrid and finished his playing days at U.S. club Orlando City in Major League Soccer. Kaka was the best paid of the entire competition with a salary of $7.2 million.
Having struggled with a series of knee injuries, Kaka returned to Milan for one season in 2013 before leaving for Orlando the following year.
"Father, It was much more than I could ever imagined".
"I needed time to think and take a very calm decision, very calm and very aware of what I will want for my professional life", Kaka said. "Thank you! I'm now ready for the next journey", he posted on Twitter, alongside a picture of himself in a T-shirt labelled "I belong to Jesus".
The attacking midfielder won the Italian Serie A with Milan and the 2007 Champions League and collected league and cup titles with Real.
But Kaka told Globo he intends to take on a sporting director role within the game and revealed a proposal from Milan featuring him playing initially before moving upstairs. He is one of eight men in the world who've won the treble World Cup, European Cup/Champions League, and Ballon d'Or.
