Velasquez suffered minor injuries and will recover physically.
Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said the driver was traveling at a high speed when he slammed into the back of a CHP SUV parked on the right shoulder. The CHP says it appears the driver of the Cadillac was not only drunk, but under the influence of drugs and was coming home from a party.
- A CHP officer was killed this morning in a crash on southbound Interstate Highway 880 just north of state Highway 92 in Hayward according to CHP Golden Gate.
The driver of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital with major injuries.
Camilleri had been with the CHP for a year and four months. The officers were monitoring traffic at the time of the crash, Sanchez said.
Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement about the loss of the officer.
CHP says Officer Camilleri is survived by his wife, daughter, sons, parents, brother and sister.
Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Camilleri, Brown said. Camilleri, 33, died from his injuries. "We join his family, friends and the entire California Highway Patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice".
Velasquez, who was sitting in the driver's seat, was injured and later released from the hospital.
The 22-year-old driver, identified only as a Hayward resident, was hospitalized with major injuries and is expected to face felony charges, officials said.
