After 8-year hiatus, Ford Ranger returns to USA in 2019

"And that's before we introduce it in the biggest truck market in the world, which is the United States".

Shortly after officially announcing its return, Ford showed off its new midsize Ranger pickup at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Sunday, Jan. 14. But its frame is reinforced with steel to meet US safety standards and it has steel bumpers.

For the US market, designers wanted to give the Ranger more of a "Ford Tough" look, explained Joe Hinrichs, Ford's executive vice president for Global Operations. US sales are up 83 percent since 2014 as a new generation of midsize truck buyers seek more maneuverable, fuel-efficient pickups. Raj Nair, Ford President of North America, asked during the presentation. "For us, it's been a matter of timing about when to deploy a great truck we've had globally". Ford engineers put Ranger through the same torture testing as the legendary F-150 goes through.

FORD has finally dropped the Aussie designed and developed 2019 Ford Ranger trade ute on the USA market - but given it an engine from the Mustang pony vehicle.

"It will be more challenging for the Ranger than it was for GM", Schuster said. During the 1990s, Ranger sales routinely totaled more than 300,000 units a year before fading in the 2000s. That's an attitude American customers expect from a truck, he said. Ford won't tell us how much power it makes but says it will be on par with rivals' V-6s.

Rangers twin-power dome hood houses its 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine designed for efficiency and capability thanks to direct fuel injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger and 16-valve design.

"To walk away and then take so long to finally figure out that they should jump back in-they are definitely way late", said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Cox Automotive.

Ford hopes to recapture some of the midsize pickup buyers it abandoned when it closed the St. Paul, Minn., plant that built the previous-generation Ranger. LMC predicts segment sales will shrink to about 428,000 units this year before resuming growth in 2019. More than 1 million mid-size trucks were sold in 2000, according to researcher Autodata.

It's less retro than some thought it might be - Ford is likely to save that design language for the upcoming Bronco, which is expected to share the Ranger's underpinnings - and more like a slightly shrunken F-150.

Under the hood, Ford removed the diesel engine it sells internationally, replacing it with a 2.3-liter turbo-charged V-6 also found in the Mustang sports vehicle. It has a new full boxed frame, which includes a new study mounting location for the steel bumpers. A tough FX Off-Road package will be available for rear- or four-wheel-drive Rangers that adds skid plates, knobby tires, off-road-tuned shocks and suspension, a Terrain Management System like you get in the F-150 Raptor, and a new Trail Control system that acts like low-speed cruise control for tricky off-road situations.
