As for how she managed to carry on, and complete the routine with such an incredible score, Papadakis said, "I prayed". They were the first to break 200 total points in an ice dancing competition, achieving the score in the 2017 Cup of China in Beijing, China, according to Papadakis's Winter Olympics profile.
"It was my worst nightmare happening at the Olympics".
"It was pretty distracting", Papadakis told reporters. "I had nightmares about it, and I thought: "'Maybe I should sew it all together again", but then I told myself to not be paranoid, and I didn't want to worry them [Papadakis and Cizeron]".
"I think the twizzles [a move in ice dancing] is the only thing that kind of affected us the most because, you know, when you rotate it's kind of hard to keep your dress on when it's open", he said. "While presenting their routine, the top of Papadakis" costume was unhooked and slipped, leaving the Greek-French skater exposed. She was left to skate the entire program with the risk of her top falling off entirely.
Credited 81,93 points, Papadakis and Cizeron are second after the short program behind their biggest rivals for the olympic gold and training partners in Montreal, Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who signed a new world record (83,67 points).
It was what Papadakis did next, however, that will define her.
Olympic ice dancers are taking extra precautions to ensure their costumes get attention for all the right reasons, using tape and glue to guarantee they stay covered up as they glide around the ice. Some were shocked by the wardrobe malfunction, while others were eager to praise the skater for keeping her composure.
The wardrobe malfunction is the second such incident to occur at the Pyeongchang Games, with South Korean ice dancer Yura Min suffering a similar dress failure last week.
And to add insult to injury, the incident was replayed in slow motion on screens at the arena. "That's what we did, and we have to be proud of ourselves, delivering a great performance".
Cizeron, 23, said it was frustrating to lose a few points over something out of their control. Just as they began their dance, the clasp on her costume became undone.
