Just as Rafa Benitez's men looked to be ascending to the heady heights of tenth, and away from the pack, following Dwight Gayle's fourth and fifth goals of the season, Bournemouth produced one of those famous retrieval missions.
Gosling popped up in the box to divert Nathan Ake's pass into the net in the 89th minute after Adam Smith had given the home side hope with a rocket of a shot to wrong foot the Newcastle goalkeeper on 80 minutes.
Ayoze Perez had also missed a chance to put the visitors 3-0 up. Dan Gosling struck a late equalizer against his former club as Bournemouth fought back from two goals down to draw with Newcastle 2-2 in the English Premier League.
Benitez said: "I've talked with him every training session about a lot of things".
On the stroke of half time Begovic lost his grip on the ball and reality as he allowed a cross identical to the earlier one from Ritchie to squirm through his hands and turn only to see Gayle hammer home number two.
"Maybe because we missed a clear chance just before the goal, so both of those together make us lack confidence in those minutes".
"It is always hard when you have a team that is pushing at home but we had the chances to finish the game and didn't do it, we have to improve on that".
"We should have been talking today about a great game and three points", shrugged Benitez. You have to defend that though, and you have defend better.
"We had been flat and Newcastle were dogged and made it hard for us, but you have to complement the players for the last 10 minutes", he told BBC Sport. He is someone who is learning, it is a question of if he can manage these situations and do well with all the pressure of football and the Premier League and people watching him and analysing his behaviour.
The Magpies remain only two points above the relegation zone, and club legend Shearer admits that he is disappointed over the result.
