Following the strong condemnation by BJP bigwigs and a massive political backlash in Tamil Nadu, state party leader H. Raja expressed heartfelt regrets over his Facebook post suggesting removal of the statue of Dravidian icon Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.

Expressing honest regret if his post has hurt the sentiments of the people, Raja said "I have removed that admin who posted the comment about Periyar and have deleted the post."I totally condemn vandalizing statues and violence". Lenin's statues were installed in Tripura for the sake of power. Panneerselvam, who is also the AIADMK coordinator, described Raja's claim that his comment on a social media post were uploaded by his administrator as "ridiculous and unacceptable".
BJP for the "indecent" act, the latter has denied this, saying it "does not practise the culture of violence". Police stopped them before they reached Periyar statue.
Chief Justice Indira Banerjee of the Madras HC stated that all the statues have to be protected, in the light of the act of vandalism on a Periyar statue in Tirupattur. "One man is a BJP member and another a CPI worker, both drunk", the police reportedly said.
