Renault shares leap after Nissan merger talks

A possibility would be basing the new business in the Netherlands or London, where cross Atlantic automaker Fiat Chrysler has the company's corporate charter, but has its headquarters in both the USA and Italy.

The two companies, which have operated an alliance since 1999, would form a new, single, listed company under the plans being discussed, according to the Bloomberg financial news service which cited information from several sources.

In the February interview Ghosn said: "We need to continue the convergence between the three companies while leaving each one of them quite independent in their markets, and each one in its country and in its culture". Renault now owns 43 percent of Nissan while the Japanese carmaker has a 15 percent stake in its French counterpart. Nissan shareholders would also receive shares in the new company in exchange for their holdings. The automaker may maintain headquarters in both Japan and France.

Carlos Ghosn, the current chairman of both companies would be heading this new company.

Renault shares jumped as much as 8.3% in early trading Thursday, hitting the highest intraday level in more than a decade. Shares of Nissan have been down close to 2% over the previous year. The 64-year-old relinquished the chief executive officer role at Nissan last year to focus on the partnership. They were joined in the alliance by Mitsubishi in 2016.
