Teenage girl shot dead in Tottenham

London police investigated more murders than NY over the last two months, statistics show, as the mayor's office condemned a "violent scourge" on the city's streets after another weekend of bloodshed.

A 16-year-old boy shot in the face on Monday night in Walthamstow, east London, has died in hospital, Scotland Yard has said.

Tanesha, whose name has not been officially confirmed, was pronounced dead at 22:43 on Monday after a drive-by shooting in Chalgrove Road near Northumberland Park, Tottenham.

A 21-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, said the teenager was "just chilling with her friends" when she was shot from a vehicle for "no reason at all". I just can't believe it - so young.

Tanesha Melbourne, 17, was shot in the chest as she stepped out of her house through a vehicle window in Tottenham after being caught in the crossfire.

The shocking tally means the murder rate in London has risen by 40% in just three years; the stark opposite to New York's crime statistics which have fallen by almost 90% since Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's harsh crackdown in the 1990s.

Fifteen people were murdered in the capital, against 14 in NY.

In 2018 so far, Met Police has investigated 46 murder - compared with 50 in the United States city.

"The Mayor is deeply concerned by violent crime in the capital - every life lost to violent crime is a tragedy", a spokeswoman for London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement on Tuesday.

The boys are 15 and 16 years old, with one getting shot and the other stabbed.

Half an hour later, police were alerted to another shooting which took place in east London, with the victim being a 16-year-old boy.

Writing on Facebook, the area's MP Stella Creasy appealed for witnesses over the "horrific and distressing incident".

A section 60 order, which allows police to search members of the public without suspicion amid the risk of serious violence, has been put in place.

"Over the past 24 hours we have had extra officers patrolling the streets, additional police cars on the road and specialist officers from our Operation Sceptre unit carrying out a range of intelligence led operations and patrols". The controversial practice was curbed by then-interior minister May in 2014 in response to criticism the practice targeted minorities.

The latest incidents will bring fresh scrutiny on the government's efforts to halt rising levels of violent crime around the country.

Sky News has identified 45 murders in the capital since the start of the year. Also the number of guns fired in violent crimes has increased by 20 percent since 2012.

Ministers point to findings from a separate crime survey which show overall offending is going down over the long term, but they have acknowledged that some of the increase in police-recorded violent crime is "genuine".

What role does social media play in crime?

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Gangs often post videos online that seek to incite violence or glamorise criminality to influence young people".

A Downing Street spokesman said: "These are all tragic cases and our thoughts are with the families of the victims".

"It makes faster, it makes it harder for people to cool down", she told the Times. "Having dealt with a number of bereaved families I'm alive to the impact it has on people when these awful incidents happen". "The government is determined to do everything it can to break the cycle".
