Slain Gaza reporter was Hamas militant

"There is a state of anger among staff in the Strip", he added, saying they were having emergency meetings against this "terrible crime". The protests are meant to last until May 15, the anniversary of Israel's founding, when Palestinians commemorate their mass uprooting during the 1948 war over Israel's creation.

The report noted that in 2015, Murtaja had attempted to bring a drone into Gaza to aid in Hamas's intelligence gathering. Dozens of protesters have been killed by Israeli soldiers since the start of the protests on March 30.

Israel pledged disciplinary action on April 10 over a soldier's leaked video showing an army sniper targeting a Palestinian across the Gaza border fence to profane praise from an onlooker, but deemed the shooting itself to have been exemplary.

Israel says it is acting to protect its military infrastructure, its border and its citizens from any breach and to prevent Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza, from using the protests as a cover to carry out armed attacks.

"This is a member of the military arm of Hamas who holds a rank parallel to that of captain, who was active in Hamas for many years", Lieberman said.

Just days after a journalist and at least eight other Palestinians were gunned down by Israeli forces during anti-occupation demonstrations in Gaza, a recent video of an Israeli sniper shooting an unarmed Palestinian man emerged for the first time on social media Monday, providing further evidence that the deliberate killing of civilians "is routine for Israel".

The Israeli army, for its part, says the footage was taken several months ago.

Palestinian security sources in Gaza said the Israeli strikes hit a base in Jabalia belonging to Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Hamass armed wing, and farmland near Beit Lahia, causing damages but no injuries.

Israel has said it has the right to defend its sovereign border, amid mounting global expressions of concern about the escalation of the past 10 days.

It accuses Hamas, the Islamist resistance movement that runs the Gaza Strip and with whom it has fought three wars since 2008, of "seeking to use the protests to carry out violence".

After gunning down an unarmed Palestinian youth, the soldiers can be heard cheering and congratulating each other.

The statement said the footage was not filmed by the Israeli sharpshooter but by a soldier from a different unit.

The military said the man was a main instigator in the clashes and was shot in the leg and wounded after ignoring warning shots and calls to halt.

Gazans are being called to report to the border fence this coming erev Shabbos too, for an even large event that seen in previous weeks.
