On Monday, university officials were able to contact his parents in Brazil, to deliver the news of his death.
The university canceled all classes for the day, but classes are expected to resume Tuesday.
Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced at a 5 p.m. Monday news conference that the suspect, a Binghamton University student, had been taken into custody.
It was the second homicide involving a BU student this year. The suspect was "described as a light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark Puma hooded sweatshirt", according to the university, and he "remains at large". He was described in the Facebook post "as a light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt".
"Law enforcement believes the attack was not a random act and that the victim was targeted", BU Vice President Brian Rose said.
Investigators interviewed witnesses overnight.
Searchers are being aided in wooded areas by state forest rangers.
Joao Souza, 19, an engineering major from Rye Brook in Westchester County, was attacked at Windham Hall at about 10:30 p.m., police said.
Jonathan Ross, superintendent of the Blind Brook school district, confirmed to paper that Souza graduated from the district's high school a year ago, but could not comment further.
"The last two months have been very, very hard", an emotional Stenger said at Monday's news conference.
"We want to make sure that everyone is reassured that the campus is safe and that there is no threat to the campus", Faughnan said. The Student Assembly is committed to ensuring no student need fear for their safety while furthering their education.
A fellow Binghamton nursing student, 22-year-old Orlando Tercero, was arrested four days later in Nicaragua and charged with her murder. Hayley Anderson, of Westbury, Long Island, was found dead in an off-campus home in March.
